What does
DEMACT mean?
DEMACT is an idea developed by Forum Apulum together with Arkivet (Norway), to support a limited number of schools to become ready to face challenges of a global and dynamic world.
A DEMACT school is a school that highlights the importance of 21st century skills like critical thinking, communication, media literacy, civic education and digital literacy.
DEMAC is a pilot project with four high schools, 80 teachers and 1000 students, that brings workshops, cultural activities and civic engagement ideas directly to schools.
Project timeline:
The project has a duration of 16 months, from February 1st 2022 to May 31st 2023.
Project budget:
Total amount granted to the two organizations is 74.791 EURO.
Participating high schools:

Four high schools will take part in the project, from medium municipalities (under 50.000 people).

Teacher activities
Teachers have the most important role in a society, shaping new generations and guiding them to become involved and informed citizens, with skills and values that will bring them financial comfort but also allow them to contribute to society. We plan to work with teachers from selected high schools in three phases: a series of workshops, a summer school and a mentoring programme.

Standard workshop package
proposes five main topics, but may be altered according to particular needs.

Summer school
will take place in August and will consist in three days of discussions and collaborative activities between a selected number of teachers, with the support of Forum Apulum experts.

Mentoring
is a key element of the programme, allowing a tight collaboration between teachers and experts. Beneficiaries will get customized feedback from experts and will keep in permanent contact, both online and face-to-face. The main goal is to develop learning tools together, such as interesting lesson plans that can be replicated by other interested teachers.

Toward this aim, we propose combining workshops with cultural activities and activities promoting participatory democracy.

5

Activities to promote participatory democracy
- a campaign to promote volunteering, and bringing students in contact with representatives of local authorities through events organized in high schools and a campaign to promote interaction with local authorities through petitions.

Organizers

DEMACT is a project by Forum Apulum, a civic organization that promotes civic education and critical thinking. Founded in 2017, Forum quickly became an association with national and international projects. Among our projects we can note "The party wants you clean cut" - an illustrated guide of Romanian communism used as a basis for talks with over 5000 students, "Gen, magazine" - a magazine written and produced by a group of 50 young people and Fake News Hunters - a project to monitor fake news spread in Romania, Greece, Georgia and Italy. The projects is implemented in partnership with Arkivet, a research association from Kristiansand, Norway. Arkivet aims to use local history from WWII to develop attitudes, skills and an understanding of the world that promotes peace and democracy.
